Protein Powders/Meal Replacements

The most common question I get asked is what protein powders do “I recommend” and which ones “taste good”. First of all, both questions are very general in nature. Without more specific qualifiers for these questions, the answers can be just as general. Right now since incorporating protein powders back into my life, I have two ones I mainly use. I like these brands because they taste and mix well.

1. Naturade VEGAN SMART Protein  (Meal Replacement)

Calories: 160
Fat: 4g
Carbs: 14g
Fiber: 5g
Sugar: 5g
Protein: 20g

Complete Protein Blend: Pea, Hemp, Chia, Potato & Chorella
Fiber & Omega Blend: Inulin, Flax Seed, Bamboo, Pea, Apple, Borage Oil
Organic Sweetener Blend: Can Sugar, Rice Syrup Solids, Stevia
Whole Food Complex: Strawberry, Blueberry, Beet Root, Apricot Fruit, Raspberry, Carrot Fruit, Mango Fruit, Pineapple, Broccoli, Cabbage, Spinach
Digestive Enzyme Blend: Bromelain, Protease, Amylase, Lipase
Prebiotics: Aloe Vera Inner Leaf

All these flavors mix well with water. There is absolutely no “chalky” taste that I’ve discovered with other protein powders. Each flavor has an authentic flavor – none of that plastic fake flavor here. I’m not sensitive to stevia’s taste so I’m not sure how apparent that flavor is.

I do not use the berry flavor since I find it’s too sweet for my liking. All flavors mix well with water (which is important if you don’t have any almond milk available). There’s absolutely no chalky taste. Since there’s stevia in the mix, those sensitive to the taste may not like this brand. The chocolate is my favorite since it has a rich flavor. If you want to mix berries and other fruit other than bananas, I would recommend trying that with the berry flavor since I find the vanilla flavor weakens the other flavors.

  1. Each type of protein powder has specific beneficial properties which make it desirable. Nutritionally and taste-wise, animal proteins are superior to vegetable proteins and far more popular. I prefer classic whey protein (Gold Whey Standard).

    1. There’s good and bad data out there regarding protein powders. Animal protein is harder on the body in terms of digestion and it’s harder for the body to break down. Most of the population is lactose intolerant so that’s not even an option for them.

Never mind the actual estrogen, antibiotics, pus, pesticides, etc found in whey, most (organic) plant based products are the way to go.

I won’t even go into the moral side of it and what happens to the cows and baby male calves in the industry.
