The perception of vegan athletes is changing as more and more athletes break world records. Once thought to be a “puny”, “weak” and “scrawny” group of people, it’s not the case anymore.
Here are 14 athletes breaking a variety of world records.
1. Jehina Malik
Starting out the list is no other than Jehina Malik. She is the first “vegan since birth” to win the IFBB Pro Bodybuilding title.
2. Patrick Baboumian
Patrick Baboumian is known as “Germany’s Strongest Man in 2011”.
He holds the “World’s Log Lift Record” under 105kg (231 lbs) with 165kg (363lbs) lift.
Another record he hold is the “Germany Heavyweight Log Lift” with his heaviest lift at 190kg (418lbs).
In 2013, he set the World Record yoke walk with 550kg (1,212lbs).
3. Brendan Brazier
Ironman Triathlete Brendan Brazier set the Bigfoot Half Ironman Course record twice and also set the record for the Canadian 50k in 2003 and 2006. He also created the Vega Food and Supplement line.
4. Billy Simmonds
Billy Simmonds is an Australian bodybuilder who won Mr. Natural Universe in 2009.
5. Alexander Dargatz
Alexander Dargatz won the World Bodybuilding title in 2005.
6. Kenneth G. Williams
Kenneth Williams made sports history in 2004 by finishing third in the Natural Olympia in Las Vegas as the first vegan in bodybuilding. In 2004 alone, he placed second in his class at the Silver & Black Muscle Classic, the Team USA contest, and the World Natural Bodybuilding Championships.
7. Mac Danzig
Mac Danzig won the Ultimate Fighter 6 competition.
8. Jason Lester
Jason lester completed 5 Ironman Triathlons in a week!
9. Rich Roll
Rich Roll also joins Jason Lester in completing 5 Ironman Triathlons in one week!
10. Alexey Voevoda
Alexey Voeyoda won Gold medals in the two and four man bobsled events in the 2014 Olympics. He is also an arm wrestling world champion.
11. Cam F. Awesome
Cam F. Awesome has won more medals in amateur boxing history!
12. Fiona Oakes
Fiona Oakes has ran marathons on all 7 continents including the North Pole. She set a new course record there by 44 minutes! In 2014, she ran the Rio marathon breaking her own two world records.
14. Carl Lewis
Carl Lewis, a world famous Olympian has won 10 medals with 9 of them being gold.
Many of these athletes have many other amazing accomplishments in their careers. To list them all would make this post very very long! Vegan athletes differ in strength, size and sport so it’s safe to say being vegan does not hinder performance or dictate what you can or cannot do. Many athletes have accredited this lifestyle to positive improvements and changes to their performance, strength and stamina. Many have also noticed quicker recovery times between workouts and training.
